Isaiah 42

✅This chapter is about the role of the exiles to the world, and the gruesome description of it.
Prophecy prior to the second exile, and likely after the first exile.
The servant is the Jewish people, not Jesus.

Isaiah 42:
1Behold My servant, I will support him, My chosen one, whom My soul desires; 👉I have placed My spirit upon him, he shall promulgate justice to the nations.👈

✅it’s important to remember, the religious Jewish people are endowed with the spirit of HY. Torah was probably a radical novelty to the standards of other nations.
Judaism has influenced the entire world with it’s righteousness. Has changed cultures worldwide into a more ethical and moral world, through the first and second exiles.

2He shall neither cry nor shall he raise [his voice]; and he shall not make his voice heard outside.

✅Rashi: nor shall he raise [his voice]: He shall not raise his voice. It will not be necessary to admonish and to prophesy to the nations, for they will come by themselves to learn from them [i.e., from Israel], as the matter is stated (Zech. 8: 23): “Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.”

3A breaking reed he shall not break; and a flickering flaxen wick he shall not quench; with truth shall he execute justice.
𝟰𝗡𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻, 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱, 👉𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 await.👈

✅Rashi: A breaking reed he shall not break: Jonathan paraphrases: The meek, who are like a breaking reed, shall not break, and the poor, who are like a flickering candle, shall not be quenched.

and a flickering flaxen wick: A wet flaxen wick, that is nearly extinguished. Their king will not rob the poor and will not break the poor and the weak.

✅ Island refers to the nations. We can see here, the stark contrast with the nations, where the weak were considered disposable. The beauty of Torah shines brightly to the nations.

5So said GD the L-RD, the Creator of the heavens and the One Who stretched them out, Who spread out the earth and what springs forth from it, 👉Who gave Neshama to the people upon it and a spirit to those who walk thereon.👈

✅i think this emphasizes the empowerment of the religious Jewish ppl, as it is evident in their remarkable lifestyle.

✅This might refer to the Northern Kingdom, in particular, who i think we’re already exiled.

✅Deut 28:36The Lord will lead you and your king whom you will have established over you, to a 👉𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 to you or your fathers; and there, you will serve other deities [made] of wood and stone.👈

9The former things, behold they have come to pass, and the new things I tell; before they sprout I will let you hear. 10Sing to the L-RD a new song, His praise from the end of the earth, those who go down to the sea and those therein, the islands and their inhabitants. 11The desert and its cities shall raise [their voice]; Kedar shall be inhabited with villages; the rock dwellers shall exult, from the mountain peaks they shall shout.
12They shall give glory to the L-RD, and they shall recite His praise on the islands.

✅The fame of GD going forth all over the world, because of the influence of the Northern Kingdom and next Judah.

13The L-RD shall go out like a hero; like a warrior shall He arouse zeal; He shall shout, He shall even cry, He shall overpower His foes.
14I was silent from time immemorial; I am still, I restrain Myself. Like a travailing woman will I cry; I will be terrified and destroy them [the enemies] together.
15I will destroy mountains and hills, and all their grass I will dry out, and I will make rivers into islands and I will dry up the pools.

✅ Isaiah 40: 7The grass shall dry out, the blossom shall wilt, for a wind from the Lord has blown upon it; behold the people is grass.
8The grass shall dry out, the blossom shall wilt, but the word of our God shall last forever.

✅Isaiah 2:11The haughty eyes of man will be humbled, and the height of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted on that day.
12For the Lord of Hosts has a day over everyone proud and high, and over everyone exalted, and he shall become humble.

14And over all the high mountains and over all the exalted hills;

17And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the Lord alone shall be exalted on that day.
18And the idols shall completely pass away.

16And I will lead the blind on a road they did not know; in paths they did not know I will lead them; I will make darkness into light before them, and crooked paths into straight ones. These things, I will do them 👉and I will not forsake them.👈 𝟭𝟳𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗼𝗹𝘀, “𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗱𝘀.”

✅ Reiterations of the curses from Deuteronomy 28. This remarkably reminds me of the Northern Kingdom, which did not have have solid solid form of Torah they could take with them, since all the priests and levites joined Judah. Lack of Torah would indeed render one spiritually blind and deaf.

20There is much to see but you do not observe, to open the ears but no one listens.
21The L-RD desires [this] for His righteousness’ sake; He magnifies the Torah and strengthens it.

✅He magnifies Torah and strengthened it through Judah.

22And it is a robbed and pillaged people; all their youths are grieved, and they are hidden in dungeons; they are subject to plunderers, and none rescues [them], to pillagers, and no one says, “Return.”
23Who among you will hearken to this, will listen and hear for the future?
24Who subjected Jacob to plunder and Israel to spoilers? Was it not the L-RD? This, that we sinned against Him, and they did not want to go in His way and did not hearken to His Torah.
25And He poured out upon them the fury of His anger and the strength of battle, and it blazed upon them all around and they did not know, and it burned among them and they did not take heed.

Pirkei Avot on Kiruv

Pirkei Avot 5:18

👉If one brings merit to the many, sin does not come by his hand, [so that he not be in Gehinnom and his disciples in Gan Eden];👈 and if one causes the many to sin, he is not given the opportunity to repent, [so that he not be in Gan Eden and his disciples in Gehinnom.] 👉Moses was meritorious and brought merit to the many [(He taught Torah to all of Israel)] — the merit of the many is attributed to him, as it is written (Deuteronomy 33:21): “He did the righteousness of the L rd and [he did] His judgments with Israel” [i.e., “His judgments that are with Israel” — it is as if he (Moses) did them.]👈 Yeravam sinned and he caused the many to sin — the sin of the many is attributed to him, as it is written (I Kings 15:30): “For the sins of Yeravam, that he committed and that he caused Israel to commit.” [Its not being written “for the sins of Yaravam and Israel” implies that all is attributed to Yeravam.]

Every Jew is obligated to keep halacha

Deuteronomy 30
1And it will be, when all these things come upon you the blessing and the curse which I have set before you 👉that you will consider in your heart, among all the nations where the L-RD your GD has banished you,
2and you will return to the L-RD, your GD, with all your heart and with all your soul, and you will listen to His voice according to all that I am commanding you this day you and your children,👈
3then, the L-RD, your GD, will bring back your exiles, and He will have mercy upon you. He will once again gather you from all the nations, where the L-RD, your GD, had dispersed you.
4Even if your exiles are at the end of the heavens, the L-RD, your GD, will gather you from there, and He will take you from there.
5And the L-RD, your GD, will bring you to the land which your forefathers possessed, and you [too] will take possession of it, and He will do good to you, and He will make you more numerous than your forefathers.
👉6And the L-RD, your GD, will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, [so that you may] love the L-RD your GD with all your heart and with all your soul, for the sake of your life.
7And the L-RD, your GD, will place all these curses upon your enemies and upon your adversaries, who pursued you.
8And you will return and listen to the voice of the L-RD, and fulfill all His commandments, which I command you this day.👈
9And the L-RD, your GD, will make you abundant for good in all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the L-RD will once again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your forefathers,
👉10when you obey the L-RD, your GD, to observe His commandments and His statutes written in this Torah scroll, [and] when you return to the L-RD, your GD, with all your heart and with all your soul.
11For this commandment which I command you this day, is not concealed from you, nor is it far away.
12It is not in heaven, that you should say, “Who will go up to heaven for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?”
13Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, “Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and fetch it for us, to tell [it] to us, so that we can fulfill it?”
14Rather,[this] thing is very close to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can fulfill it.👈

Isaiah 41

✅Chapter 41 is a little bit cryptic. It must be read several times to see who the prophet is referring to.

This chapter seems to be about surrounding pagan nations with their false prophets, and Babylonian demise by king Cyrus. Return from exile.

𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗮𝗵 𝟰𝟭

1Be silent to Me, you islands, and kingdoms shall renew [their] strength; they shall approach, then they shall speak, together to judgment let us draw near.

✅ “Us” refers to the Jewish nation.

2Who aroused from the East, [the one] whom righteousness accompanied? He placed nations before him and over kings He gave him dominion; He made his sword like dust, his bow like wind-blown stubble.
3He pursued them and passed on safely, on a path upon which he had not come with his feet.

✅ According to Rashi, Abraham is one coming from the East:
V8 “Abraham, who loved Me”

4Who worked and did, Who calls the generations from the beginning; I, the Lord, am first, and with the last ones I am He.

5The islands shall see and fear; the ends of the earth shall quake; they have approached and come.
6Each one shall aid his fellow, and to his brother he shall say, “Strengthen yourself.”
7And the craftsman strengthened the smith, the one who smooths with the hammer [strengthened] the one who wields the sledge hammer; he says of the cement, “It is good,” and he strengthened it with nails that it should not move.

✅V. 5-7 refer to pagan nations. V7 Description of making idol.

8But you, Israel My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, who loved Me,
9Whom I grasped from the ends of the earth, and from its nobles I called you, and I said to you, 👉”You are My servant”👈; I chose you and I did not despise you.
10Do not fear for I am with you; be not discouraged for I am your God: I encouraged you, I also helped you, I also supported you with My righteous hand.

11Behold all those incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded; those who quarreled with you shall be as nought and be lost.
12You may seek them but not find them, those who quarrel with you; those who war with you shall be as nought and as nothing.

13For I, the Lord your God, grasp your right hand; Who says to you, “Fear not, I help you.”
14Fear not, O worm of Jacob, the number of Israel; “I have helped you,” says the Lord, and your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.
15Behold I have made you a new grooved threshing-sledge, with sharp points; you shall thresh the mountains and crush them fine, and you shall make hills like chaff.
16You shall winnow them, and a wind shall carry them off, and a tempest shall scatter them, and you shall rejoice with the Lord, with the Holy One of Israel shall you praise yourself.
17The poor and the needy seek water, but there is none; their tongue is parched with thirst; I, the Lord, will answer them, I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.
18I will open rivers on the high places, and springs in the midst of valleys; I will make a desert into a pool of water and a wasteland into sources of water.
19I will give in the desert cedars, acacia trees, myrtles, and pines; I will place in the wilderness boxtrees, firs, and cypresses together.
20In order that they see and know, and pay attention and understand together that the hand of the Lord did this and the Holy One of Israel created it.

21″Present your plea,” says the Lord; “present your strong points,” says the King of Jacob.
22Let them present and tell us what will happen; the first things what were they? Tell, and we will take it to heart, and we will know their end, or the coming events let us hear.
23Tell the signs coming later, and we will know, for you are gods; you will even benefit and harm; let us talk and let us see together.
24Behold you are of nought, and your deed is one of shouting; the abominable one will select you.

✅ Referring to pagan false prophets.

25I have aroused from the north and he came; from the rising of the sun he shall call in My name. And he shall come [upon] princes like mortar and as the potter treads clay.

I have aroused from the north and he came: I tell the future events. Behold I arouse Cyrus from the north to build the ruins of Jerusalem, and he came upon Babylon to destroy it.
from the rising of the sun he shall call in My name: (Ezra 1:2) “All the kingdoms of the earth has the Lord God of the heavens given me.” And it appears that Persia is northeast of Eretz Israel. Another explanation is: I aroused Nebuchadnezzar from the north to destroy My city, and he came, and I aroused Cyrus from the east, that he call in My name to build My city, for the kingdom of Persia is east of Eretz Israel, as it is stated (Dan. 8:4): “I saw the ram butting etc.” [This verse in Daniel proves it. “I saw the ram butting to the west and to the north and to the south.” We deduce that he came from the east.] Jonathan paraphrases: I brought speedily a king, strong as the north wind, and he will come as the sun comes out with its might from the east; I will strengthen him with My name.
and he shall come [upon] princes: And he shall come upon the king of Babylon and upon his princes as he would come to trample upon mire, and as a potter tramples clay for earthenware vessels, so will he trample the princes.

26Who told from the beginning that we may know, and from before, that we may say, “He is just”? Not one told; not one let us hear; not one hears your statements.

✅Pagan false prophets.

27The first one to Zion, behold, behold them, and for Jerusalem I will give a herald.

✅ Rashi:
The first to Zion, behold, behold them: The first king who will give heart to Zion, behold he is the one I mentioned, and even though the redemption will not be completed through him, he will be the one to initiate it. (Ezra 1: 3) “Whoever of you from all His people…”
behold them: The elders of Israel will be ready, according to his statement, to go up from the exile and to begin.
and for Jerusalem I will give a herald: in those days, [viz.] Haggai and Zechariah, who will encourage them to build it in the days of Darius III of Persia.

28And I look, and there is no man, and of these, and there is no counselor, and I ask them that they reply with a word.
29Behold them all, their deeds are nought, of no substance; wind and nothingness are 👉their molten images.👈

Breslov Yeshiva

Simcha Hochman:

HH here by the holy tomb of the Ramchal and Rabbi Akiva we have a little Breslov Yeshiva, where they begin the day at midnight and try to follow the holy ways of Na NaCh NaChMa NaChMaN MayUMaN. So just now I entered the room they were learning in, and I overheard their teacher explaining to them, that one who eats pig Gd forbid, sins, but he has a portion in the future world, however, one who sins and shames a Jew Gd forbid, loses his portion of the future world. Therefore it is obviously much more important to be careful and stringent with regard to guarding not to say anything bad of a fellow Jew, than to be guardful of eating pig.
This is what they are teaching here, may they merit to the light of Na NaCh NaChMa NaChMaN MayUMaN

NaNach Scholar

I ran into Simcha Hochman on Facebook. His knowledge was Scholarly, and his communication eloquent and articulate. I sent a friend’s request, but it was months until he accepted. At this time I was learning the Yeshivish Hashkafa.

He wasn’t fazed by all the questions I bombarded him with. In as much as he was Haredi all his life, he was very accessible to ask questions to.

I already had a list of scholars I was connected to, and to add yet another scholar to my list was like bitting the bullet, and inspite of my apprehension, i proceeded forward.

Simcha comes from a family of scholars. In his humble opinion his father, who is Rosh Yeshiva, is probably the most knowledgeable of all the Yeshiva world. The late Noach Weinberg who started Aish hatorah – was his grandfather’s younger brother, and his whole family and lineage is full of the likes.

Simcha’s mother, who is direct decendant of the first Slunimer Rebbe, keeps herself very busy with giving classes on zoom and tutoring. She gives classes to converts to get them up to speed. And she organizes leftover food from bakeries to be distributed to the poor. And all types of other things.

The following are some of his words in the interview:

“HH always was religious, with full belief, no doubts, just was more interested in pursuing whatever vanities I was still allowed…

even the college was through a Yeshiva.
It was run by Rabbi Berel Wein – he’s very famous just Google his name. Always was religious, just until college I was looking to maximize on this worlds lust…

… only after I started college, only then I started to study Torah seriously.

… until it got to a point that I couldn’t waste my time any more with the secular stuff, and I went fully Torah. Mostly Talmud but also Bible, and eventually Ramban on the Torah.

…yes, and also I just didn’t have time for it, I was literally studying and praying (just the necessary ones) almost 20 hrs a day.

…that’s from college till 24. At 20 I ran to Israel very suddenly, and continued there.

… at 20 two months into the semester (not sure even if I had signed on for the secular that term) I ran to Israel and didn’t look back.

… at 24 I discovered Kabbala. At 28 I discovered NaNaCh

… and I didn’t have anyone to help. Went searching rabbis, rosh Yeshivas, chasidic masters, even shrinks, couldn’t find anyone that had real truth and direction.

until I met some NaNaCh and they told me that I wouldn’t find anyone. Didn’t want to believe them, so even after I was becoming more and more NaNaCh I kept searching. Until I determined that this was the real truth, today there are no contemporary rabbis that have the real truth and direction. That is when I became completely NaNaCh.

HH every day for a few months I serenaded everyone with a beautiful original NaNaCh song at dawn before the morning prayers from my seat by the holy tomb of Na NaCh NaChMa NaChMaN MayUMaN

HH this is the chair I slept in, where I lived for a few months. NNNNM

HH in Uman I had that seat. But during Rosh Hashana it was impossible to remain there it is absolutely mobbed, so my friends allowed me to crash on some chairs in their kitchen (where everyone else was shelling out probably around $350).

Me: I’m curious, who is sponsoring the property you are living in now?

HH this is squatters land, a guy just built our place and BH we merited. NNNNM.

Me: where did you learn how to be homeless?

HH step by step, first I left the Yeshiva system and was on my own in the big world, and then even in a foreign city, and then even without a house just a tent, and many more stages BH. Thing is BH never did I have to sacrifice on hygiene or mikva or so many extra blessings. NNNNM.

HH thanks to a generous donation from Shalom Beny I was able to order another 75 holy Nanach books for hafatza in Toronto with Uzi Sergio Smilovich. Even though I am still left with a debt of many hundreds, I couldn’t help but to order more BH.
May HY bless him with all the blessings and salvations of Na Nach Nachma Nachman Meuman!

Me: I see you are risk taker…

HH this is the surest most guaranteed investment possible… NNNNM

Isaiah 40

✅This chapter seems to be referring to the redemption.

1″Console, console My people,” says your God.
2Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her, for she has become full [from] her host, for her iniquity has been appeased, for she has taken from the hand of the Lord double for all her sins.

✅ Jeremiah 16:18And I will pay first the doubling of their iniquity and their sin, for their profaning My land; with the carcass of their detestable things and their abominations they filled My heritage.

✅Leviticus 18:
27For the people of the land who preceded you, did all of these abominations, and the land became defiled.
28And let the land not vomit you out for having defiled it, as it vomited out the nation that preceded you.

3A voice calls, “In the desert, clear the way of the Lord, straighten out in the wilderness, a highway for our God.”

✅ Isaiah 62:10Pass, pass through the portals, clear the way of the people, pave, pave the highway, clear it of stones, lift up a banner over the peoples.11Behold, the Lord announced to the end of the earth, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold your salvation has come.’ ” Behold His reward is with Him, and His wage is before Him.

4Every valley shall be raised, and every mountain and hill shall be lowered, and the crooked terrain shall become a plain and the close mountains a champaign.

✅ Isaiah 42:
15I will destroy mountains and hills, and all their grass I will dry out, and I will make rivers into islands and I will dry up the pools.
16And I will lead the blind on a road they did not know; in paths they did not know I will lead them; I will make darkness into light before them, and crooked paths into straight ones. These things, I will do them and I will not forsake them.

5And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh together shall see that the mouth of the Lord spoke.

✅ Isaiah 11:9They shall neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mount, for the land shall be full of knowledge of the Lord as water covers the sea bed.

✅ Jeremiah 31:33And no longer shall one teach his neighbor or [shall] one [teach] his brother, saying, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know Me from their smallest to their greatest, says the Lord, for I will forgive their iniquity and their sin I will no longer remember.

6A voice says, “Call!” and it says, “What shall I call?” “All flesh is grass, and all its kindness is like the blossom of the field.
7The grass shall dry out, the blossom shall wilt, for a wind from the Lord has blown upon it; behold the people is grass.
8The grass shall dry out, the blossom shall wilt, but the word of our God shall last forever.
9Upon a lofty mountain ascend, O herald of Zion, raise your voice with strength, O herald of Jerusalem; raise [your voice], fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
10Behold the Lord God shall come with a strong [hand], and His arm rules for Him; behold His reward is with Him, and His recompense is before Him.
11Like a shepherd [who] tends his flock, with his arm he gathers lambs, and in his bosom he carries [them], the nursing ones he leads.
12Who measured water with his gait, and measured the heavens with his span, and measured by thirds the dust of the earth, and weighed mountains with a scale and hills with a balance?
13Who meted the spirit of the Lord, and His adviser who informs Him?
14With whom did He take counsel give him to understand, and teach him in the way of justice, and teach him knowledge, and the way of understandings did He let him know?
15Behold the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and like dust on a balance are they counted; behold the islands are like fine [dust] that blows away.
16And the Lebanon-there is not enough to burn, and its beasts-there is not enough for burnt offerings.
17All the nations are as nought before Him; as things of nought and vanity are they regarded by Him.

18And to whom do you compare God, and what likeness do you arrange for Him?
19The graven image, the craftsman has melted, and the smith plates it with gold, and chains of silver he attaches.
20He who is accustomed to select, chooses a tree that does not rot; he seeks for himself a skilled craftsman, to prepare a graven image, which will not move.
21Do you not know, have you not heard has it not been told to you from the beginning? Do you not understand the foundations of the earth?
22It is He Who sits above the circle of the earth, and whose inhabitants are like grasshoppers, who stretches out the heaven like a curtain, and He spread them out like a tent to dwell.
23Who brings princes to nought, judges of the land He made like a thing of nought.
24Even [as though] they were not planted, even [as though] they were not sown, even [as though] their trunk was not rooted in the earth; and also He blew on them, and they dried up, and a tempest shall carry them away like straw.
25″Now, to whom will you compare Me that I should be equal?” says the Holy One.

✅Numbers 23:
19God is not a man that He should lie, nor is He a mortal that He should relent. Would He say and not do, speak and not fulfill?

✅1 Samuel 15:
28And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you, today; and has given it to your fellow who is better than you.
29And also, the Strength of Israel will neither lie nor repent, for He is not a man to repent.”

26Lift up your eyes on high and see, who created these, who takes out their host by number; all of them He calls by name; because of His great might and because He is strong in power, no one is missing.
27Why should you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way has been hidden from the Lord, and from my God, my judgment passes”?
28Do you not know-if you have not heard-an everlasting God is the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth; He neither tires nor wearies; there is no fathoming His understanding.
29Who gives the tired strength, and to him who has no strength, He increases strength.
30Now youths shall become tired and weary, and young men shall stumble.
31But those who put their hope in the Lord shall renew [their] vigor, they shall raise wings as eagles; they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not tire.
